Can the Indiana Fever survive without Kelsey Mitchell, or is her exit a death knell for the team?

Indiana Fever have inched up the standings with their recent win against the Chicago Sky, now sitting at a 16-16 record. Just three more victories could secure them a playoff spot, or even a few losses from Atlanta or Chicago might help them clinch a place in the final eight. While rookie Caitlin Clark has undoubtedly been a standout for the team, it’s impossible to overlook Kelsey Mitchell’s brilliance as she leads the team in scoring this season. Though Mitchell’s future with the Fever remains uncertain, the well-known analyst Rebecca Lobo has recently shed light on Indiana’s off-season plans.

Recently, Rebecca Lobo took part in a conversation at ESPN where she was asked to give clarity on whether Kelsey Mitchel might depart from the Fever post this season. “I would say probably not but also I have to look into this further. I don’t think Kelsey Mitchell has ever been called, and I don’t think any other players on the roster are called.  So even if Kelsey Mitchell wants to leave in free agency, I don’t know that she can,” Lobo stated via The Elle Duncan Show.

Well, Lobo also remained doubtful if Mitchell would want to leave Indiana Fever. The team has surely become a preferred spot for the WNBA player because every player would want to play in a sold-out arena. And it seems Fever could well capitalize on that in their off-season as well. Lobo said, “I’m really intrigued what they can do in free agency in this offseason. Not only with Kelsey, but are they going to be able to entice some other big-name players to come play there because of greed?  There’s a lot of pressure that comes with it but also it’s a whole different level of exposure now if you’re playing for Indiana.”

While Lobo has added an interesting layer to the Fever’s off-season, their main focus still would be the ongoing action at WNBA. However, they should explore options to add to their ranks when the season ends as Kelsey Mitchell herself has given a subtle hint to leave the team. Let’s discuss what strikes rumors about Kelsey Mitchell’s departure.

Kelsey Mitchell hints about leaving Indiana Fever

Since joining the WNBA in 2018, Kelsey Mitchell has been a loyal member of the Indiana Fever. It was in 2021 when she signed a three-year extension, solidifying her commitment to the franchise. It’s a perfect fit for Mitchell, who’s from Indiana and loves playing close to home. But now the 28-year-old guard might be choosing a different path for her future.

Recently, when Kelsey Mitchell was asked about her thoughts on the Fever hosting the 2025 All-Star Game, her choice of words sparked speculation about a possible departure. “I guess, I was excited. Obviously, I’ve been in Indy for the last years of my life. But I’m excited that Indy gets a chance to host it. Shoutout to Indy for that, I’m excited for them,” said Mitchell which left everyone confused.
Well, Kelsey Mitchell has been the go-to scorer for the Fever over the past five seasons, and this year is no different. Averaging 18.5 points per game, she once again leads the team in scoring. With 3,651 career points, she ranks second in franchise history. As a two-time WNBA All-Star and a reliable scoring threat, Mitchell is exactly the kind of player the Fever would love to keep on their roster. It would be interesting to see if the points highlighted by Lobo would be enough to make Kelsey Mitchell stay at Indiana Fever.
