Spain's OT thriller vs. China—Does this game prove women's basketball is more exciting than ever?

Though Megan Gustafson isn’t one of the core Las Vegas Aces stars, her ability to hold her nerves during crucial moments has always got her a place in the team whenever the situation demands. And now making complete use of her talent, Gustafson helped her national team Spain get a win over China in an overtime thriller. This had Alysha Clark celebrating her teammate, and that caught the fancy of many hooping enthusiasts.

Clark took to the social media networking site and applauded Gustafson for her bucket during the overtime that ultimately helped Spain win a nail-biting clash. “Big bucket Meg!!! There’s that roar 🦁🙌🏽 @GustafsonMeg10,” Clark stated. She also gave credit to Gustafson during another game-turning moment and tweeted “YEAAAAAH @GustafsonMeg10 ! 🤩💪🏽.”

Spain was at loggerheads with China on Sunday and the game at the end of the fourth quarter was a tie. Both teams were positioned at 76 points. During the overtime, Gustafson showed her nerve of steel as she made a layup that helped Spain cruise to a 78-76 lead. Next, she again scored 2 points when she was assisted by Maite Cazorla which took the score to 85 as compared to China’s 82.

Even during the closing minutes of the OT, the 27-year-old made another layup that helped Spain maintain a lead and reach 87 points as opposed to China’s 84. By the end of the game, Spain had cruised to 90 points whereas the Chinese were one less with 89. This definitely called for a celebration for Clark who cheered for her teammate with full enthusiasm as Spain earned their first victory in the Paris Olympics.

Overall, Gustafson scored her team’s highest 29 points with 8 rebounds. Other than her, the other star performer for Spain was Leonor Rodriguez who hit 25 points with 3 rebounds and 4 assists. It was efforts like these that helped Spain finally trump China and start their Olympic campaign on a winning note.

Have an interesting take?

Gustafson had previously given a hint of what was to come when she was selected for the Spanish Olympic squad. She had expressed her happiness for the same and a thing worth noting is that she hasn’t been trusted with so much onus before by the Las Vegas Aces. “Becoming an Olympian is something I have dreamt about my whole life,” said Gustafson before stating that she was “grateful, excited, and ready to start,” as per the Aces website.

Now that Gustafson has performed in an exemplary fashion, hopefully, she will also get more time for the Aces. And who knows if she can take her paltry averages in the WNBA to touch the ceiling.

Meanwhile, Spain will be celebrating their first win in the Olympics and hoping that many more such come with time. Till then, fans can also have a good time watching the celebrations.
