The ‘Dream’ of Allisha Gray soared higher than others tonight. Becoming the only WNBA star to win back-to-back events on a single night, the Atlanta Dream guard also cashed in on the wins. She participated in both the Skills Challenge and the 3-point contest in the WNBA All-Star Weekend. She beat the local star Sophie Cunningham of the Mercury in the Skills and outlasted Jonquel Jones of the New York Liberty in the shooting event.

ESPN’s Alexa Philippou tweeted the 7-year veteran’s earnings for the night. She posted, “Allisha Gray, take a bow! The Dream All-Star is the first-ever winner of *both* the 3-point contest and the skills challenge. And courtesy of Aflac she’s taking home $110,000.” Interestingly, this is simply the bonus amount that she has won. Nneka Ogwumike, President of WNBPA, announced last night that Aflac will be supplementing the league’s prize money with $55,000 for the winners of the event. The WNBA will also be rewarding her with $2,575 as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The total of this will come to $115,150 which is a whopping 62% of her $185,000/ year salary this season. Adding more thrill is the fact that she became the first WNBA player in the league’s 27 years of history to win both the Skills Challenge and the 3-point contest in a single year! Or should we say in just 2 hours?! Let us look at how she became the star tonight and what she plans to do with the money.

Allisha Gray: The star among the stars

The South Carolina alum certainly transformed a possibility into a reality. It was interesting that the 2x All-Star was participating in both the Friday night contests but it is amazing to see that she got the best of others as well. In the first round of the Kia Skills Challenge, Allisha Gray completed the obstacle course in 31.2 seconds to reach the final against Sophie Cunningham. While she could not beat her own time as she recorded 32.1 in the final round, it was enough to beat the Phoenix star. Cunningham put up 34.5 seconds on the clock.

The Starry 3-point contest was also quite interesting. New York Liberty’s Jonquel Jones put up 25 points in the first round which Gray followed with 23. In the final round, Allisha Gray dropped 22 points. As Jones missed her Moneyball shot to the rim, the 5x WNBA All-Star lost by 22-21. As for the prize money, Allisha Gray had previously mentioned how she wanted to start a business. However, her comments after the historic night were quite contradictory. She said, “Now that I think about it, had a good nap, maybe I’ll go on a little golfing spree, shopping spree.”

What’s your perspective on:

With back-to-back wins, is Allisha Gray the most underrated star in the WNBA?

Have an interesting take?

Although she may have switched her priorities, it remains worth applauding that she did achieve this huge feat. Previously, only Becky Hammon (3-point shooting contest in 2007 and skills challenge in 2009) and Sabrina Ionescu (Skills in 2022, 3-Point in 2023) have won both contests but not in the same year. Something that Allisha Gray did, proving her worth as the All-Star to keep an eye out for.
