A'ja Wilson breaking records—Is she the greatest WNBA player of our generation?

One after another, Angel Reese’s feed has been filled with upsetting news. First, the Chicago Sky’s 70-86 loss against the Atlanta Dream all but confirmed their spot out of the playoff. Now, her status as the league’s leading rebounder has been snatched from her. Who else could have done it? It’s A’ja Wilson.

It all happened this Tuesday, on September 17th, during the game against the Seattle Storm. Just 10 minutes into the game, the two-time MVP recorded 3 rebounds, reaching a total of 447 in a single season. In doing so, she surpassed Angel Reese’s record of 446, which was achieved in the 34 games of her rookie season. Wilson took 4 more games.

By the time Wilson entered Climate Pledge Arena, she was merely two rebounds shy of matching the rebounding record. After two quick defensive rebounds in the opening minutes, she grabbed a third off Skylar Diggins-Smith’s three-pointer miss. She added 4 more later on to bring her rebound total to 451. This added yet another feat to her impressive record-breaking streak.

In just a couple of games, Wilson now holds the league’s single-season scoring and rebounding records. The cherry on top? She’s also the first WNBA player to reach the 1K milestone in a regular season. But there’s a reason behind her impressive records before the conclusion of this regular season.

It’s the 2024 MVP title

Have an interesting take?

Despite already having two MVP titles, Wilson’s thirst remains unquenched—she wants another this year. In her pursuit, she’s creating a new legacy, and it seems destined. With an impressive 13.1 average rebounds, Angel Reese could have easily set the bar even higher. The rebounding leader still averages one full board more per game than Wilson.

However, as Chi-Town Barbie went down with a left wrist injury that ended her rookie season, the Aces’ star took control. This brought her one step closer to earning the third MVP honor of her career this season. As of now, the 28-year-old boasts a league-high 27-points per game average, nearly five points more than any other player in the league.

In fact, her 21 points per game average across six seasons is tied with Cynthia Cooper for the best scoring output in WNBA history. She also adds 12 rebounds and a league-high 2.6 blocks per game, enough for the Aces to stand fourth on the board. The dominant run has already had several calling the 27-year-old a unanimous MVP for the season.

But for now, Wilson and Co., with a 25-13 record, are a full game ahead of the Storm in the standings but still trail the Sun by two games. They have one final regular season game against the Dallas Wings on Thursday.
