A'ja Wilson is unstoppable! Is she the greatest player in women's basketball right now?

Call her diamond in the rough or plainly dominant, the Olympics is experiencing a force to reckon with. A’ja Wilson has proven in every game so far why she is the hottest women’s basketball player currently. Especially, on the road to their 59th straight victory, the Las Vegas Aces’ forward is nothing short of a glass-shattering menace on the floor. As she adds another feather to her hat, even her South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley cannot help but be in awe of the sensational basketball player.

Team USA has been fighting hard against who Jewell Loyd recently mentioned as a threat to their run. But, what A’ja Wilson is doing is simply marvelous. Coming into the Bercy Arena for their first quarterfinal showdown, the 2x Olympian was already leading the team with 20.3 points per game. After recording stellar numbers for her squad, Wilson today marked her third double-double in the competition. According to Alexa Philippou, this is the most of any women’s player in the Games.

It is not just the accomplishment but also doing it in front of her former head coach and fellow Olympian, Dawn Staley, that makes the achievement even more precious. Dawn Staley took it to her X account to show her excitement of watching her NCAA champion on the Olympic stage. She tweeted, EYE SPY @_ajawilson22! I love it here!”

Team USA finally took over Nigeria for the 6th time in their matchup history. Leading the game was the 2x WNBA champion A’ja Wilson with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Here is how the sensational athlete has performed in her Olympic career so far.

A quick look at A’ja Wilson’s Olympic journey

Drafted by the San Antonio Stars in 2018, the former Gamecock has represented the USA in the Olympics twice now. Previously in the 2020 Tokyo Games, she, along with Brittney Griner, led the scoring for the national squad. The two were averaging 16.5 points per game back in 2021. In the opening two games, she already joined Teresa Edwards alongside 3x Olympian Breanna Stewart to average 20+ points in consecutive games.

Have an interesting take?

Now, with the urgency of the knockout rounds, she is putting up her WNBA-like points on the scoreboard. In today’s game, she already set the pace with the first quick bucket. Adding 20 points with 9 of 11 shooting from the field, she certainly is setting some high standards for the upcoming generation of the USWBNT.

Apart from the double-double, Alexa Philippou also tweeted how the WNBA superstar “recorded her fourth career 20-point, 10-rebound Olympic game.” This again is a feat that no player in the history of the USA women’s program has achieved.

Certainly, A’ja Wilson is on a mission, and she is stepping up on every occasion. The Team USA will now face the Opals in the semifinals. Head-to-head, the USA has a 19-game advantage over Australia. Hence, will the Opals achieve what the Nigerian team could not? Only time will tell.
