A'ja Wilson's record-breaking game—Is she the greatest player in WNBA history?

“I’m going to come in more focused mindset.” A’ja Wilson clearly followed through on her words after a defeat at the hands of the New York Liberty. So much so that the MVP race frontrunner surpassed her own record tonight against the Los Angeles Sparks. To make the night even more memorable, she did what she always does—taking time for her fans. However, this one hit quite close to home.

The Las Vegas Aces needed tonight’s win to balance the records with the Sparks. So far, they had only won the very first meeting. Since then, Dearica Hamby’s masterclass has led the 2x WNBA champions to two consecutive victories. But tonight, it was A’ja Wilson who reminded them who she was. Last year, she had 16 20-10 games, the most in the league. Picking up the pace much more quickly this time around, she has already surpassed her own mark. With Sunday’s game numbers in the ledger, she now has 17 20-10 games in the regular season. She grabbed 34 points and 13 rebounds in the 87-71 home win.

After the game, the 2x WNBA MVP also ensured that she would give some love back to her fans. One in particular was this young girl. Las Vegas staff writer– Will Despart — posted the heartwarming gesture from the 27-year-old. He captioned it, A’ja Wilson creates a core memory for a young fan after the Aces win over the Sparks #ALLINLV

In the video, she adorably talks to the young fan as she signs her tee. A’ja Wilson even offered to sign the girl’s jersey, which she cutely obliged to. It was certainly a cheeky moment, something entirely different from what the 2x Olympic gold medalist does on the court.

A sneak peek into A’ja Wilson’s win over the LA Sparks and the records she inked

With the final chapter of the season for the two teams concluding tonight, their story is also over. Now, they both have a 2-2 record against each other. With her 30+ point performance, A’ja Wilson took the first step in her vow to hold her teammates accountable. She also made 5 steals in the game, with 2 blocks to wrap up the night.

Have an interesting take?

Talking about the hard-fought win, A’ja Wilson told ESPN, “I think today we took a lot of things personal because their wins. Two of them (were against) us. There were nail-biters, OTs, but that wasn’t us. It shouldn’t have ever been that way. So, I think we were all just very hungry in that sense.”

After the LA Sparks game, she continues to build her WNBA record for most consecutive games with 20+ points and 10+ rebounds. Currently, she stands at eight. She is also the only professional athlete in the league to record 30+ points, 10+ rebounds, and 5+ steals in multiple games. Adding even more reason to celebrate, she now joins Candace Parker, Sylvia Fowles, and Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese as one of the few players to record consecutive double-doubles, with eight such games.

It seems like the future Hall of Famer has spoken true as she continues to add to her legacy, not just with the Las Vegas Aces but also in the WNBA. Although the battle against the LA Sparks ended on a neutral note for A’ja Wilson, there is much more for the team to prove, especially since they are on their three-peat run, which they feel has not been as good as it could be.
