Does A'ja Wilson's performance against the Sparks make her the best player in the WNBA right now?

The Los Angeles Sparks fought tooth and nail today to earn a 98-93 home victory over the 2x defending champions, the Las Vegas Aces. However, A’ja Wison stole the spotlight after delivering an astonishing performance that has put her name beside the elite in WNBA history. It seems like she is breaking records almost every time she sets foot on the floor. While she is already leading the league in points and blocks per game, Wilson is 2nd in rebounds this season. And on Friday night, she put that all on in a stunning display.

Wilson set the floor on fire as she recorded 35 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 blocks in the game and became the third player to achieve this feat after Lisa Leslie (2001) and Candace Parker (2008).

In 2001, LA Sparks’ Leslie had dropped a hefty 35 points, 16 rebounds, and 7 blocks against the Sacramento Monarchs setting the record. 7 years later, Candace Parker followed in her footsteps and surpassed Leslie’s scoring after registering 40 points, 16 rebounds, and 5 blocks against the Houston Comets.

While this loss surely came as a surprise considering the form of the teams ahead of the game, Wilson continued her stunning season where she is the clear MVP frontrunner. The game on the other hand was an interesting affair with the Sparks giving tough competition to the Aces.

Sparks’ center Dearica Hamby led the team with 28 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 assists, while guard Aari McDonald dropped 23. Sparks rookie Rickea Jackson looked strong beyond the arc, making back-to-back 3s and tallied 14 points and 6 rebounds in the game. The Sparks were on their best display, making clutch passes and steals.

Adding to Wilson’s score for Las Vegas, Kelsey Plum registered 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists, while Jackie Young added 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Chelsea Gray, coming off from a year-long recovery, moved cautiously, scoring 3 points, 3 rebounds, and 6 assists. Off the bench, Kate Martin looked energetic with 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists within 17 minutes on the floor.

She set the record in just 193 games and left Angel McCoughtry and Breanna Stewart trailing at 195 and 207 games, respectively. In her fifth game of the season, she made another record by registering 20+ points and 10+ rebounds in 5 consecutive games and became the first player to do so in WNBA history.
