Can moments like A'ja Wilson's with Griner's son boost the WNBA's popularity among fans?

Baby Bash is making his way to the court! It was an intense Phoenix Mercury vs Las Vegas Aces game, where the latter proved victorious 97-79. It was a historic game in many ways, as the Mercury also broke the single-season record for team technicals at 33. The New York Liberty had originally set it in 2001, but Phoenix has catapulted to the limelight. Even if it’s not the best kind of spotlight, one sweet moment did make its way to the forefront.

After the game, Brittney Griner’s wife Cherelle could be seen on the court, surrounded by players of the Aces and Mercury alike. The lawyer had a small bundle wrapped in her arms as everyone, including A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young, gathered around to take a peek at the baby. The Griners became parents to the baby boy this July, after some harrowing experiences since they got married in 2019.

But the moms are over the moon after this new addition to their family. “He is amazing,” the WNBA player told We Need to Talk. “They say as soon as you see him, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window, and that’s literally what happens,” she added. And much like her, fans can’t get enough of the moment of these ‘gold medal aunties’ cooing over Baby Bash!

“Auntie energy is the best,” claim WNBA fans as Brittney Griner’s son makes his on-court debut

In a video posted by PlayersTV and All Things WNBA, a small crowd forms around Cherelle and Brittney Griner. Players from both teams come in to take a peek at the newborn and the caption aptly claims, “Having a bunch of gold medal aunties is a nice flex🏅” The comment section agrees, as one fan points out, “Auntie energy is the best”

Of course, Bash’s basketball mom is a three-time Olympic gold medalist with Team USA. But, A’ja Wilson is the proud owner of two, so is Chelsea Gray, and so is Jackie Young! Their recent medals came at the Paris Olympics, where the US beat the host country in an encounter with a hairbreadth of score difference at 67-66.

Another fan pointed out how the players keep the competitive energy for on-the-court moments, “Love it competitive on the court, family off ❤️” While Wilson’s team emerged victorious against Griner’s Phoenix Mercury, they were all smiles off the court. There are still seven games left in the season, so the Phoenix team will be looking to clinch the playoffs after missing them last season.

But amid the tension of battling for the final spots, this was a much-needed lighthearted moment between the teams. “I’m just over here sobbing by how wonderful and wholesome this moment is 🥹” as one user wrote.

The Griners announced in April 2024 that they were expecting their first baby, who was born in July. In an interview afterward, Brittney Griner told NBC’s Nightly News, “Every minute I feel like he’s popping in my head. I’m thinking about him. It’s like, I can hear him, sometimes. I feel like I can smell him. It’s just — my world changed.”

Just after he was born, the 10x All-Star had to leave for Paris for the Olympics. “It is hard leaving, but at the same time, he’s gonna grow up in a sports family, so he’s gonna understand,” Griner said of that moment. “What he’s really worried about right now is just sleeping and milk time.”

And indeed, as newborns tend to do, baby Bash was likely staying in his mom’s arms with his eyes closed, even as basketball aunties crowded around him. One fan declared in the comments, “I know A’ja’s nose was red from crying 😂🫶”

“I love the sisterhood of the W ❤️” another one wrote. Among this bunch, Griner’s teammate Diana Taurasi is also a mom, and so is Chelsea Gray. The latter’s wife Tipesa gave birth to their firstborn earlier this year, and it was an emotional first Mother’s Day for the Aces player.

“Mother’s Day used to be what do I get my mom? Make sure I call my grandmother. It’s still the same, but now I’m receiving calls,” Gray said. “It really hasn’t dawned on me that I have a day now.”

As the fight on the court continues, the sweet moments among the players off of it keep fans going!
