The 2024 Paris Olympics has already set a new standard by bringing in equal number of female and male participants for the very first time in the event’s history. This certainly is a huge step towards improving the image of women’s sports in the world. Still, there are a few things that have continued to ick the female athletes. Hence, with the biggest stage available, Team USA’s Diana Taurasi and Breanna Stewart have come together to create a new narrative for women in sports.
Breanna Stewart became a mother back in 2021 one day after Team USA won a gold in Tokyo Olympics. Then, she mentioned how the first thing she did was to run home and see her firstborn Ruby Mae Stewart-Xargay. After 3 years, she is a mother of two and is bringing her kids along with her for what they think is a “vacation.”
Talking on the same, she told the reporters in Paris, “Speaking as a mom, and speaking for moms, especially those that are here in the Olympics, we wanna be great at both. And really taking pride in that. Making sure that whether we’re with our kids or on the basketball court, I wanna be the best that I can be. And to show my kids that when they get older, they can do anything they want.”

She further added, “So, I think for us moms that are in the Olympics, we just wanna continue to change the standard. Change the narrative. Because there haven’t been so many kids as there are in this one ever. We only want that to continue and grow.”

Breanna Stewart also has a son Theo Josep Stewart-Xargay. She, along with her wife, Marta Xargay, and the kids have flown to Paris for a family vacation-cum business trip. Interestingly, the Paris Olympics is the first event that will have a designated place for children. It will even have playgrounds and events specifically designed to keep the young ones entertained. Going on the opposite spectrum, the oldest basketball player Diana Taurasi has to explain her goal to everyone.
The change in narrative that Diana Taurasi is bringing with her age
This year, Diana Taurasi became the oldest athlete to participate in the quadrennial event in USA’s Olympic history. She will also be the first basketball player to have 6 consecutive gold medals if the USA does win one. Whether you look at her WNBA career or national career, the Phoenix Mercury guard has architected a resume that speaks for itself. Still, what everyone sees is the fact that she is 42 years old. Certainly, she has faced criticism to make Team USA’s roster. Opening up about the same, she told the reporters, “It’s a bit disrespectful. I’m here to compete, play at a high level, and win a Gold medal.”
Diana Taurasi further added, “Especially in women’s sports, in women’s professions, only a woman would have 20 years of experience, and it’s an Achilles heel instead of something that is treasured and used as a way forward for our sport and for women. Hopefully, we can change that narrative.”

The Mercury star earlier announced that she will be retiring from her national career after representing USA for two decades. Hence, this will be her final dance while wearing the red, white, and blue jersey. Nevertheless, she is completely focused on her one goal and that is the gold medal for her country. Team USA will take on their 2020 Tokyo Olympics Finals opponents Japan on July 29.
