The Connecticut Sun have already lost multiple core players, their head coach, and now potentially one of their top defensive contributors—all in a single offseason. Are they going for a rebuild? Possibly. With the WNBA offseason in full swing, many fans are also excited for the upcoming Draft, possibly headlined by Paige Bueckers.

According to popular opinion, UConn Huskies’ Paige Bueckers is the star of the upcoming draft class. ESPN projects Bueckers as the Dallas Wings’ No.1 pick. However, the rumors surrounding the Wings’ don’t stop there as the Western Conference team is now reportedly looking to add one of Connecticut Sun’s best defensive options to their roster.

The Wings’ backcourt options have long been a thorn in their sides after a poor showing in the 2024 WNBA season. Satou Sabally has already left but new GM, Curt Miller, will be thrilled to go shopping as the Sun’s DiJonai Carrington is now emerging as a top target to join the franchise. While the Wings look to strengthen their side even further, it is a year of loss for the Sun.

Sun recently lost head coach Stephanie White, the 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year who helped the Uncasville-based team accomplish a record of 55-25 over her two seasons. That’s not all – key players such as DeWanna Bonner, Brionna Jones, and Alyssa Thomas will also be leaving the franchise as free agents. At the same time, focal point guard, Tyasha Harris, was traded to the Phoenix Mercury, who then traded her to the Dallas Wings.

With so many key figures gone, the Connecticut Sun is facing one of the most significant roster overhauls in recent WNBA history, while the Wings continue to build a squad that could reshape their fortunes in 2025. Amidst these rumors, fans of the Sun have mourned the loss of their team’s core group.

In fact, Carrington was one of the worst hit by all the moves, stating on X yesterday, “this is sick 😩😩😩😩😩😂😂😂😂😂 omgggg cryin in the club.” This was in response to a tweet that stated four out of last year’s starting five were off the roster now. The only one still there was Carrington herself. But doesn’t look like that’ll be the case for too long.

After spending her first four seasons with the Sun, DiJonai Carrington could soon reunite with former teammate Tyasha Harris. The Wings have indulged and invested in three key free agents.

Were there hints all along for DiJonai Carrington’s potential move?

Reports indicate that so far they have started the process of acquiring Harris, as well as 2022 overall no. 2 pick Kiki Herbert from Phoenix, and 2025 no. 8 pick NaLyssa Smith from Indiana Fever. The Wings, who will most likely select Paige Bueckers, now look to strengthen their defense as official negotiations begin today.

While fans of the Wings express their joy over this potential trade, many have begun to notice the signs that already signaled this move. In December 2024, DiJonai reacted to the Wings’ new coach hiring of Chris Koclanes with just 4 words on her Instagram story: “Great hire, great guy!

The two did cross paths from 2019 to 2022 when Koclanes was an assistant coach for the Sun. However, we believe that the timing of the rumors and story wasn’t just a pure coincidence. Now, as rumors swirl about Carrington’s potential move to the Dallas Wings, that tweet seems less like an emotional reaction and more like a farewell message to a team that has undergone a complete overhaul.

Carrington put up 12.7 PPG, 5.0 RPB, 1.7 SPG, and 0.4 BPG for the Sun during the 2024 regular season. The former Stanford guard averaged 29.6 minutes for the Sun last season. For the Wings, it would make a lot of sense to acquire someone with such versatility and extensive experience playing at the top level.
