Is NaLyssa Smith the Indiana Fever's Pete Best, destined to be forgotten despite her talent?

“I love the game,” said Kelly Krauskopf, claiming to know everything about basketball. She wouldn’t be wrong. With 25 years between the WNBA and NBA, she knows exactly how to navigate the complexities of negotiations with players, balancing payroll, and everything else. In fact, she’s been doing it longer than many Fever players have played the game. All this makes her well-suited for making decisions about the Fever’s roster. And she’s already making some moves.

The first major decision involves the team’s head coach, Christie Sides. Despite helping guide the team toward its first playoff spot in eight years, Sides is parting ways with the Fever. “Leave it better than you found it,” Sides shared on X. Her message came after the Fever officially announced they were bidding farewell to her. Now, Indianapolis is the sixth WNBA team to change head coaches this offseason. Krauskopf, however, is far from finished.

It has a plea from the fans to trade off  NaLyssa Smith from the Fever’s roster. Speculation of her moving also surfaced after the 24-year-old forward took the Fever out of her social media bio following the team’s first-round playoff exit. This fueled rumors of a potential offseason move.

Smith even addressed the rumors with a pointed post on Twitter. Alongside highlights from her 2024 season, she wrote, “not too bad 4 a scrub.” Fans saw this as an end-of-season message, which they interpreted as a possible goodbye. Though Smith has denied the rumors multiple times, talk of her departure has only grown, with fans speculating about the future of this talented player.

While Smith is still with the Fever, fans now have a strange request.

They want smith to be gone. “Now get NaLyssa off my f**king team,” penned one user on X. Smith has shown her skills on the court, but her rocky relationship with the Fever has made fans increasingly frustrated. Dijonai Carrington discussing about her playing minutes in a now deleted post, did not seem to help either.

Now fans call for her to be traded. “I think the front office knows how we feel. She gets traded,” added another fan. Smith was a standout during the regular season, averaging 10.6 points and 7.1 rebounds in just 24.8 minutes per game. However, her postseason performance didn’t match up.

“Everyone wanted to free her—let’s go?” wrote another fan. During the playoffs, Smith saw limited action, averaging only 2 rebounds in 6.4 minutes per game. “I agree it’s time to part ways with Smith,” added another user.

In one game, she played just 4 minutes, and in another, only 9 minutes, as the Fever faced the Connecticut Sun, in their first two playoff games.

She won’t be in the lineup next year, guaranteed. NaLyssa is more or less the Pete Best of the Indiana Fever,” commented another fan. Despite all the speculation, Smith remains under a 3-year  $226,668 contract with the team lasting through 2025. However, she’ll become a free agent after the next campaign, making the upcoming season pivotal both on and off the court, as her decisions will be crucial for her career trajectory.
