Germany won the 2023 FIBA World Cup by defeating Serbia 83-77 in a thrilling final to earn the gold medal for the first time ever in the tournament’s history. A few notable players, including Franz Wagner, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Dennis Schroder, stood out during the game’s emotional rollercoaster.

Following this historic victory, former Dallas Mavericks player and NBA champion Dirk Nowitzki posted on social media his congratulations to Team Germany.

The tweet translates into English as “World Champion!!! Incomprehensible! What a team!!!!!”

And now that his fellow German and Dallas WNBA player is in the playoffs, he couldn’t help but acknowledge Satou Sabally. “I’m so happy for her. She’s worked extremely hard. She’s gotten better from year to year,? Dirk Nowitzki said.

Breaking Dallas’ historic game down

On Tuesday night, the Dallas Wings won a WNBA playoff series for the first time since moving to Dallas in 2016.

With a decisive victory of 101-74 over the Atlanta Dream, the Dallas Wings have now secured their spot in the WNBA playoff semifinals. Teaira McCowan controlled the boards with 12 points and an astounding 16 rebounds. On the other hand, Arike Ogunbowale, the game’s hero, led the charge with an incredible 20 points.

However, it was not just the fearsome duo of Ogunbowale and McCowan that shined. The Wings accomplished a rare accomplishment by becoming the first WNBA team to have seven players score in double digits in a playoff game. Awak Kuier and Satou Sabally (0) each scored 13 points, and Kalani Brown added 12. As for Crystal Dangerfield and Natasha Howard, they added 11 and 10 points respectively.

On the other side of the floor, Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray put in a heroic effort. Howard scored 21 points and Gray added 19. Notably, Rhyne Howard, who had earlier scored an incredible 36 points in Game 1, set a WNBA record by scoring 57 points in her first two playoff games.

The game took a dramatic turn when the Dallas Wings outscored Atlanta 29-10 in the second quarter. This gave them a dominating 52-34 lead. Dallas finished off a 13-1 run by making a wide-open 3-pointer from Natasha Howard to give them a 48-31 advantage. In the opening period, Ogunbowale and Sabally scored a combined 24 points, helping the Wings’ remarkable field goal percentage of 50%.
