Can Gabby Williams' return change the dynamics of the WNBA this season?

Ever since American-French power forward Gabby Williams showcased her talent at the Olympics, her return to the WNBA has been speculated. She has received various offers from fellow contenders and even franchise managers to join the league. Angel Reese among them. However, Chi-Town Barbie isn’t the only one impressed by Williams at Chicago Sky.

On August 13th, her teammate, Diamond DeShields, was interviewed by Julia Poe, where she was asked about Williams’ performance at the Olympics. DeShields replied, “Physically, she was just incredibly gifted and could do a lot.” According to the Sky icon with a wing span of 6’5, she herself was the best at jumping higher until she saw Williams standing vertical.

“Well, I mean, I never saw somebody that could jump higher than me, so we had like vertical testing. I remember her standing vert was something crazy. I was like, oh, she’s like really athletic,” she added. It seems Williams’ high jumps gave her an advantage, helping her attain an average of 4.7 rebounds and 15.5 points per contest at the Olympics.

Williams’ standout performance came when she scored 19 points in the thriller of a game against Team USA in the finals. Aware, DeShields adds, “As long as you just keep working hard, and she’s done that again, so it’s just a testament to her hard work.”

Gabby Williams, the No. 4 overall pick by the Chicago Sky in the 2018 draft, played with the Sky for nearly two years before being traded to the Los Angeles Sparks. She played 5 seasons with the league before joining the national training camp ahead of the Olympics. It was reportedly due to the WNBA’s prioritization clause, which suspends players if they don’t arrive at training camp on time. Williams was on the receiving end of it last year.

Nonetheless, she reportedly plans to return to the WNBA which has only increased the interest.

Angel Reese’ has finally replied

On August 11th, a Chicago Sky rookie, mesmerized by Gabby Williams’ gameplay, wrote, “Ok, now that the game is over, would you like to be a part of the Chicago Sky again??? @gabbywilliams15 😭🤔 (thought it wouldn’t hurt to try lmaoo),” on X. But now, just a couple of days later, it seems she did a complete 180 on her previous statement.

In today’s interview with Julia Poe, she gave a very vague reply. “It was just a joke,” she said. According to Reese, Gabby Williams is not someone she got to know after the Olympics. Instead, “Chi-Town Barbie” has been “a fan of Gabby since she was at UConn.” The 22-year-old always tries to borrow some things from Williams’ game. “She plays hard, and I love that about her. It was tough to see her losing, obviously, but I just love Gabby,” she added.

To lighten the mood, Reese tried her best by jokingly extending an offer to Gabby to rejoin the Chicago Sky. She even got a reply.

“orrrrrr we could just play together for a different organization 👀🤷🏽‍♀️😂,” Williams penned, suspiciously pointing to the Unrivaled league. It seems there’s a chance that spectators will get to see Williams and Reese playing together.
