The Chicago Sky is entering a new era. One which is filled with successes, even in failure. As the 2024 WNBA rookies try to become the next faces of this relatively new team, their performance on the floor will be key. Although head coach Teresa Weatherspoon is leaning on defense, Angel Reese has other plans. After a huge win over the 2023 finalists New York Liberty, the defensive menace disclosed her alternate strategy to wreak havoc on her WNBA opponents.

Talking to the reporters on Media Day, the recently turned 22 athlete delved into what her playing style will be in the WNBA. She said, “Being able to be that point forward, having a conversation with coach about that earlier on. They want me to get rebounds sometimes and push it. Being able to start that. So, me being able to get comfortable and be confident within that again. So, it’s going to obviously take games and time. But in practice, I work a lot on it. And just being able to do a lot of things that consider me being versatile.”

While the Chi Barbie had created her image as a defensive force in her college career, she was always good on the other end as well. Before that, in high school, many considered her one of the best wings as she played a different role. Hence, she is now moving forward by combining the two.

The Sky definitely has some young players who are great on defense. Consequently, T-spoon and Angel Reese both seem to be getting her in the offensive role more. This was quite visible in her game against New York at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago.

“They’re in for something special”: Angel Reese gives a peek into the Sky’s future

During her home debut, the Chi-Barbie grabbed 13 points and 5 rebounds. Seeing this, it is quite apparent that she did not put her time into getting the boards. Instead, she boosted her team’s chance of winning by contributing double-digit scores. She is also practicing ball handling and playmaking to be the versatile position Weatherspoon and the team requires at present. However, when asked about her home debut in front of the season ticket holders, she had an exciting message.

Addressing Wintrust’s atmosphere, Angel Reese said, “It was so much fun. Knowing that that was the only season ticket holders in there and there were a lot of people in there. I’m just excited to be here. Chicago really embraces us and loves us. I think they’re in for something special this year.”

Certainly, Reese has also played an essential part in transforming the view of women’s basketball. And now she is only raising her own level as she steps into the professional world. With already two performances where she is able to give double digits to her team, it will be interesting to see if the double-double NCAA queen captures the same energy in the WNBA too.
