Nneka Ogwumike stands with Dearica Hamby on her legal battle
Former Aces player now with the LA Sparks Dearica Hamby has filed a discrimination claim against her former team. The complaint claims Hamby was traded due to her pregnancy and accuses the WNBA of inadequate investigation, suggesting retaliation. Furthermore, Hamby believes the team retaliated against her, resulting in a toxic work environment. Allegedly, she was also forced to postpone her pregnancy plans for the next two years, according to the lawsuit.
In light of this, the 2016 WNBA Champion and President of the WNBPA Nneka Ogwumike recently took to social media to extend her support to her 29-year-old teammate on her pregnancy injustice. The Ogwumike-led Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in 2020 addressed some of the major maternity concerns. The resolution saw some groundbreaking changes in the rulings which were mutually agreed upon by the players and the league.
However, the recent allegations suggest there’s still a lot to be changed.

This legal battle comes months after the WNBA conducted an investigation into Hamby’s initial allegations against the Aces. Following the investigation, the league suspended Hammon for two games and imposed a future draft pick forfeiture on the Aces.
As the Aces and Liberty prepare for their highly anticipated Finals match-up, the turmoil surrounding Hamby’s allegations has cast a shadow over the league.
