Just 13 games into the season, Kate Martin has already become a fan favorite. After being unexpectedly selected as the 18th overall pick in this year’s WNBA draft, the All-Star fans voting list brings another surprise for her. The All-Star voting started on June 13 and will be concluding on Saturday, June 29. She is currently sitting at #12 on the voting list, to which she had a reaction that justifies why she is earning fans’ admiration.
When asked about her rank on the All-Star fans voting list, Martin gave a humble 5-word reaction. “Oh my gosh, I’m embarrassed,” as she is still a rookie, but she is feeling thankful for all the support. “No, it’s cool. I feel really grateful for the fan support that I have, and they don’t have to do that. They don’t have to go and vote for me and all that takes extra time out of people’s day so, I really appreciate it.”
What makes her more lovable is her belief that there are more deserving candidates who should be getting the votes and she wishes to earn her place on the All-Star roster. She said, “I haven’t earned anything since I have been here. So I really appreciate all my fans out there and I love them…….I feel really grateful. It’s really cool. It’s an honor. But there are way more deserving people to go to the All-Star game that deserve those votes over me for sure.”

In the 13 games she has appeared in the season so far, Kate Martin has averaged 4 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.3 blocks, and o.2 steals. Moreover, she is playing alongside some of the best players in the league including A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young. So, her path is simply going to grow northwards in the coming days.
As of June 21, Kate Martin had 91,565 votes. Los Angeles Sparks rookie, Cameron Brink is a spot above her with 95,728 votes. However, she won’t be available due to her ACL surgery, which has ruled her out for the season. The two star rookies of this draft class, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, are 2nd and 7th with 216,427 and 118,490 votes, respectively. While fans want all these rookies on the floor in Phoenix, there might be a twist in the tale.
The 2024 WNBA All-Star Game voting and how it works
This year, the All-Star game will witness a little twist in things as twelve players will be selected for the team, regardless of which conference. This group of 12 players will be pitted against the U.S. Olympic Team. The voting pool includes 50% of the fan votes toward a player, while the rest of the combined 50% counts toward WNBA players and WNBA media votes (25% each). As a result, the total fan votes will break ties, if any.
Moreover, the fans can vote for 6 frontcourt players and 4 backcourt players till the voting deadline on Saturday. So, the top 10 eligible players will be considered WNBA All-Stars. However, if some of them are on the Olympic team, then the next 36 highest-voted players will be put in a pool and then the WNBA coaches will vote for the remaining players, but they cannot vote for their own players.
