“I’m glad you are leaving!” Kim Mulkey said these shocking words to Caitlin Clark after the Iowa Hawkeyes got the better of the LSU Tigers in the 2024 Elite Eight. To many, this unusual way of wishing the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer for her WNBA journey would seem rather bitter. But in fact, it showed how the Hall of Famer head coach respected the No. 22. Now, even after moving into the professional world, the Des Moines native seems to be having the same effect on the other teams as she once again breaks yet another record.
Many would argue that Caitlin Clark’s strength was her deep shots from far beyond the arc. However, she herself had mentioned how her assists were her true power. Certainly, this is what she is proving in the WNBA as she leads the league with 8.2 apg. Carolyn Peck, the caller for the game and ESPN’s analyst discussed how Caitlin Clark’s play-making ability and not the shooting is becoming the key to success for the Fever with every game. In the half-time show, the 1999 NCAA Championship-winning coach mentioned, “The biggest thing is that Caitlin Clark realizes she is not in Iowa anymore.”
She also compared her output as a Hawkeye to her growth as a WNBA player by saying, “I think the difference is when she played at Iowa, Lisa Bluder required her to take a lot of shots. She was the go-to. (Caitlin Clark) had to do probably 70-80% of what this team needed on the offensive end.” Peck also added, “But while playing for Indiana, she has learned to play with a great center in Aliyah Boston. She has learned how to get the ball to Kelsey Mitchell, the shooter from the perimeter. And mixing it all in, offense is flowing for Indiana. I think it’s the maturation of Caitlin Clark.”

Tonight, the first overall pick broke Courtney Vandersloot’s record for most assists (18) in a game. She recorded a brilliant stat line of 24 points and 19 assists in Indiana Fever’s road loss to the Dallas Wings. Despite the loss, she has her name echoing in the College Park Center. Here is how the top contender for the ROTY is doing so far.
Caitlin Clark: Iowa Hawkeyes vs Indiana Fever stat comparison
The generational talent of women’s college basketball broke over 46 records during her time in Iowa. Certainly, it was a huge achievement in itself. But she also broke Pistol Pete’s 52-year-old record of leading the DI for all-time scoring. Then, she took the Hawkeyes to their consecutive NCAA Championship game and became a first overall pick for the 2024 WNBA drafts. Not just this, she was leading the NCAA in points per game (31.6 ppg), assists per game (8.9), and for most 3-pointers made with 201 all in her senior year. She was also leading her team with 403 field goals made (886 attempted.)
Now, she has brought the same energy to her rookie season in the WNBA. Caitlin Clark has already broken multiple records. Not to mention, in the league’s 28 years, she is the only rookie to lodge a triple-double. Moreover, she now has 9 double-doubles as well. This accounts for most by a guard in the league in a rookie season. With tonight’s game, she is leading the league in assists per game as well. The rookie left Alyssa Thomas of the Connecticut Sun behind to dish out 8.2 assists per game. She is also leading the WNBA for most points created. Additionally, while her deep shots may not be as magical as they used to be, she is still the third-best in the league with 71 3PMs.
