With the Wimbledon Championships ended, another page in the history books of tennis has been filled.?Chinese Taipei player, Hsieh Su-Wei and her partner, Elise Mertens won the women’s doubles final on Saturday.
The two completed a thrilling comeback against Russian pair, Elena Vesnina and Veronika Kudermetova. Hsieh and Mertens went down in the first set; however, they pulled off a stunning comeback to clinch the next two sets.

Hsieh Su-Wei and Elise Mertens displayed a great sense of partnership in their win
Hsieh and Mertens displayed a great sense of solidarity and determination in their quest for a Wimbledon title. The side won the match 3-6, 7-5, 9-7 in the end, showing their true spirits. With an impressive performance, the duo won their first Wimbledon title together.
Hsieh, a senior to Mertens in both age and experience, won her third Wimbledon doubles title. She defended her 2019 doubles title, as she paired up with Barbora Strycova that year. She won her maiden Wimbledon Championship back in 2013, when she was playing with Peng Shuai.
“It’s always not easy to play in the final, and the opponents will fight super hard. We all know it’s the last match so we will fight until the last point definitely. All the partners, they are amazing to help because sometime I get on the court at the beginning, and I do not start very well.
“Really good job to help, so it helps a lot,” said Hsieh in her post match interview.
Elise and Hsieh escaping match point scare
After a 6-3 first set loss, the pair had very less hopes of coming back into the game. However, with a champion’s mentality, they played some hardcore tennis to win the second set. They saved two match points in the second set and won with a score of 7-5.

“It was definitely disappointing that we had some matches that we didn’t finish, couldn’t finish some chances. But I think the best thing to do is to learn from it. If you keeping negative about it, you’re not going to go any further, you’re not going to go forward, not going to grow as a team,” said Mertens.

The pair will be hopeful of claiming a title together at the US Open, later in August. However, they will be focusing on their country’s Olympic campaigns for now.
