Seeming like a hot topic to debate- whether a driver can be dropped this early in a season– that too when the season has only just begun, is well Jacques Villeneuve’s idea of a discussion on Pierre Gasly- or something like it.
Sounds utterly random, right? But, well.
Because, heck, why would you do that, unless and until a bloke’s done an awful lot of damage to the side?

But doesn’t seem like Pierre Gasly’s done that awfully bad for Red Bull.
Or has he?
Sure, Pierre Gasly wasn’t able to collect a point at Melbourne. This is when his teammate, albeit more experienced one, landed on the podium.
Sure, at Sakhir, in the follow-up to the famous Albert Park event, Pierre Gasly couldn’t break into the top five, so to speak.
But does that mean that a former F1 driver can earn some brownie points by showing the door to a youngster like Pierre Gasly that early in a season?
And if that’s not what a former world champion is implying here then what is he?
Pierre Gasly, someone who’s yet to land on the podium may not be utterly familiar in what’s being said about him. But what he and his fans should know is that Villeneuve’s comments (on Pierre Gasly) seem rather unfounded and perhaps defunct.
So far, it’s clear that Max Verstappen is the more sorted and consistent driver of the two in Red Bull.
After all, a fighting third in the very first of the race of the season reaffirmed the fact that the genuine talent notwithstanding, it was the class of the more experienced driver in the team that aided the Horner’s outfit.
A team loses a lot and gains only as much by dropping someone experienced especially during the middle of the tournament.
But think for a second that Horner’s team would fire Gasly– what good would that serve?
That told, it doesn’t appear that Red Bull would want to disassociate themselves with the talented Pierre Gasly, someone who collected not a single finish close to the top five on the grid, forget breaking into the top tens.
But Jacques Villeneuve, not someone who you’d expect would keep to himself in anything pertaining to an opinion about Formula 1 or any of its drivers has shared something about Gasly.
It appears that Jacques Villeneuve isn’t quite sold on Pierre Gasly and his form which is perhaps why he is of the view that “If Gasly continues like this, returning to Toro Rosso would not be a surprise,” sharing about the Frenchman’s struggles.
While some might immediately nod their head in approval for, after all, Pierre Gasly wasn’t supposed to have registered DNFs for Red Bull, but, in fact, put the car in fighting (or competitive stages), to most others, the above statement may just sound plain stupid.
In fact, let’s play the devil’s advocate.
Just a few days back, it was Pierre Gasly himself who had admitted that “I’ll have to adapt to it compared to last year’s Toro Rosso, which was better suited to my driving. At the moment I feel a bit like a passenger,” when quizzed about his comfort level with the car.
That told, why’s that Pierre Gasly may not be in the scheme of things at Red Bull?
Well, you’ve got to perform or perish. Pretty obvious. This, after all, seems the only reason as to why the outspoken French-Canadian driver has shared his ‘humble two cents’ about Max Verstappen’s teammate.
But on the other hand, there seems to be something that only adds to the suspicion surrounding Villeneuve’s declaration or warning on Pierre Gasly being rather lame.
Has Horner or Verstappen shared anything alarming about having the former Toro Rosso driver in the Red Bull racing-suit?
Apparently, Villeneuve’s directed one’s attention to one of the sharpest men off the grid in F1; but one taking decisions from inside the paddock: Dr. Helmut Marko. This, according to Villeneuve, is an accusation that Dr. Helmut Marko has made on Pierre Gasly.
It concerns the Red Bull driver having compromised the team’s winter testing all thanks to some ‘damaging crashes.’
The above told it doesn’t appear whether two race results offer a great explanation regarding someone’s actual racing talent or form, or does it? This is Pierre Gasly, with only 28 race starts against his name not some veteran of the sport.

But Mr. Villeneuve- can you answer a question, please?
Pierre Gasly may not be a champion driver of the class that you were.

But that said, can you just share how many podiums did you collect from 2002-2006, which is, roughly, half of your career stint?
If you happen to score no podiums and gather 27 points from 5 seasons (refer to the stats here), then Jacques Villeneuve Sir, how exactly are you correct at judging someone who’s only just begun? Remember, Gasly’s debut race was in 2017 in Malaysia.
