Was Matteo Berrettini's rising fame too much for their relationship to handle?

Love and tennis often go hand in hand. From the Federer-Mirka pair to Agassi-Graf, the sport has blossomed many romances. However, not all relationships withstand the test of time, and some fade into the past. While Badosa and Tsitsipas might find their way back to each other, former couple Matteo Berrettini and Ajla Tomljanovic decided to part ways. Two years after their separation, many still wonder what went wrong in their romance.

Tomljanovic and Berrettini announced their separation in February 2022 after four years of dating. While there wasn’t a specific reason for their split, Tomljanovic revealed they were having problems. “You look for something that will last a lifetime and it wasn’t meant to be. Yeah, it’s just life that still happens even though you’re a professional athlete,” she said.

On the other hand, Berrettini also disclosed his side of the story. “We broke up because in the end, in life, we have to be happy, and if that is not happening, I think it’s not worth it,” he said. Both Tomljanovic and Berrettini’s statements indicate that the tennis stars were not happy as a couple, so they decided to part ways and move on in their respective careers.

Despite appearing in Netflix’s Break Point episode 2, the couple separated shortly after filming. They began dating in October 2019 and were often seen showing support and affection for each other. In a 2022 interview with The Age, Tomljanovic said, “You can hear people say that they never date a tennis player because, I don’t know, they don’t like that they do the same thing, that it’s always about tennis. But, in reality, we don’t talk about tennis a lot.” Meanwhile, for Berrettini, dating Tomljanovic was “something that is positive” because she understands Berrettini and the tour demands.

While they understood each other’s professional needs, Berrettini and Tomljanovic felt their relationship wasn’t working out. This instigated the couple to break up and move on. Berrettini confirmed his split in a Queen’s Club Championship press conference last year and said, “Yeah, I’m single but it’s not like something that I am looking for, like, it’s not that I’m waking up and have to find love, It’s just something that is happening, it’s good for me, if it doesn’t, it’s another day, you know. But, yeah, overall, I’m spending more time with my team, I spent a lot of time with my family when I was injured, and I enjoyed a different kind of life a little bit.”
