It was an all Swiss affair in the Men’s Singles Quarter-Final as 8th seed Stanislas Wawrinka took on the 2009 champion Roger Federer, who’s seeded 2nd.

Wawrinka was quick to start, breaking Federer early to take a 3-1 lead. It took him just over half an hour to wrap up the first set. Federer looked shaky and Wawrinka was hitting winners at will. The second set told a similar story, as Federer had no answers to the raw power of his compatriot. Wawrinka looked on course to a straight sets win after comfortably taking the second set 6-3.

It was on serve in the third set, Federer hanging in as the crowd started getting behind him. A tie-breaker was inevitable, as both held on to their serves. But it was Wawrinka’s sensational shot-making that dismantled the second seed in the end. After a sublime display of tennis that lasted over two hours, it wasn’t long before it was game, set and match for Wawrinka 6-4 6-3 7-6(4). This was also the first Grand Slam match since 2002 in which Roger Federer did not break a single game of the opponent.

Wawrinka, the 2014 Australian Open champion will be playing his 3rd Grand Slam Semi-Final. But this will be Wawrinka’s first ever Semi-Final appearance at Roland Garros. Next up for Wawrinka, is home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who just edged out Kei Nishikori in a 5-set thriller.
