The relationship between human beings and horses goes back centuries, when it was the sole mode of transport. The companionship resulted in a deep understanding of each other. Today, despite no longer being in domestic use they are still part of the equestrian sport. However, the sport often comes under scrutiny due to unfortunate mishaps with the horses.

In Houston, a recent event unfolded that caught the attention of netizens and sparked criticism towards the authorities. The incident came to light after a news channel uploaded a clip reporting on the matter. Shockingly, a horse was left dead on the street for a period of two weeks.

A dead horse left in Houston for two weeks

The southeast neighborhood of Houston witnessed a heart-wrenching incident. The families in the area complained that a dead horse was left to rot on the wayside for two weeks. The area where the horse was left is at the intersection of Cullen Boulevard and Belfort Avenue. The families in the neighborhood said that the stench of the corpse could be found from miles.

One witness said that “It looks like somebody just left the horse, it stinks when I walk by my heart goes back of my back“.  He further appealed that somebody has to do something about it. After questioning the authorities, the city of Houston said that the horse was removed at 1:30 afternoon. It further explained that they are investigating the matter of how the horse arrived there.

The city’s waste management authorities stated that, according to their system, they collect dead animals from curb roads or main roads from Monday to Friday, between eight in the morning and five in the evening. However, residents complained that the horse had been there for two weeks. This event drew sharp reactions from the internet and the equestrian community.

Netizens fume at the equestrian fatality

The incident has left people fuming and complaining about the negligence of the authorities. One netizen wrote, “This happens all of the time in this area. It’s disrespectful and disgusting” complaining that is a regular practice in the area. Another online viewer said, “Why isn’t the owners held accountable for leaving it there .. isn’t that still considered cruelty to animals??” suggesting that action should be taken against the owner of the horse.

Another user who appears to be from the area commented, “I seen that horse yesterday so sad and the police officer drove right past it“. One netizen wrote, “This is an example of mismanagement by the City of Houston” pointing toward a lapse in the administration.

The incident has raised questions about the cruelty and apathy towards animals. Further steps taken are yet to be updated by officials but from the looks of the online furor, a marked change is sorely needed.
