Manchester United keeper David De Gea has told his Old Trafford employers that he wants to leave to complete a long awaited move to Real Madrid this summer, according to various reports from Manchester.

The 24-year old has been in brilliant form over the past 18 months and wishes to move back to his hometown. De Gea’s exit will leave Man United stranded with no proper backup. De Gea has just a year left on his current contract and as such his value is diminishing rapidly.

The attraction of playing for the Spanish giants combined with the opportunity to return to his home city and residence of his girlfriend were significant factors in De Gea’s decision to leave the Premier League.

United will not want De Gea to leave on a free transfer. With Louis van Gaal’s interest in Real Madrid keeper Keylor Navas as a potential factor,  a swap deal could perhaps be in the offing. It looks entirely plausible that the Premier League side will see yet another top talent leave the club for a move to the Spanish giants.

The likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo have followed similar paths to the one De Gea may very well take this summer.
