Animal Rights Advocate Demands Rodeo Shutdown Following Disturbing Footage of Neglected, Suffering Horses

Imagine a sunny day at the Selkirk Rodeo, where you have gathered to watch the air bronc riders and their thrilling feats of horsemanship. However, this year, the excitement has taken a dark turn. Amidst the cheers, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded that has ignited a fervent call for change. As the video of the incident went viral, animal activists and lovers have come forward to demand a ban on such events.

A Horse’s agonizing fall

A video by Animal Justice has captured the distressing moments at the Manitoba Rodeo as a horse collapsed just seconds out of the gate. With its leg clearly injured, the animal struggled to rise. Various spectators saw the horrific scene with their eyes and couldn’t believe the terrible pain the horse must have been undergoing at that time.

With the injured horse lying helpless, the rodeo crew swiftly intervened, attempting to ease its pain and suffering. A veterinarian, however, was not officially on-site. Then, a rodeo competitor, who also happened to be a veterinarian, was called upon to make a critical decision. Without proper medical equipment or euthanasia drugs at hand, the vet had to take action to end the horse’s agony.

Calls for stricter regulations

The incident at the Selkirk Rodeo has brought to light the pressing need for better regulations and oversight in the world of rodeos. Caitlin Mitchell, a lawyer with Animal Justice, said, “Manitoba is basically the wild west when it comes to rodeos. It seems like no one is looking out for these animals. Something has to change.”

The mistreatment of animals at rodeos is a troubling reality that we often don’t see. Horses and other animals involved in these events are subject to immense physical and psychological strain. Furthermore, they are under tremendous pressure to perform which causes injuries. And the lack of immediate medical attention contributes to an unfortunate end of their lives.

Voices from the public: Demands for change

As the shocking video circulated, it sparked intense reactions. One YouTube user commented, “What a horrible blood sport. Stop playing cowboys/girls and abusing animals for entertainment. Boycott rodeos.” This comment is on the same lines as statements made by animal rights activists who are asking for a reevaluation of the ethics of rodeos and the treatment of animals within them.

Nevertheless, we also believe that it’s high time to act and end such torture of animals. The welfare of animals must be prioritized over entertainment, and steps need to be taken to ensure that such distressing scenes are not repeated. Horse riding should be done always with love, compassion and respect.
