A marriage proposal is a joyous occasion of love and celebration. It is a testament to the relationship and a step towards a better future, but some stories don’t always have a happy ending.

In a tragic throwback to a bone-chilling incident in Tanzania, where the boyfriend ended up losing his life in his attempt to pull off an elaborate proposal.

Marriage proposal gone completely wrong

Steven Weber and his girlfriend Kenesha Antoine were staying on Pemba Island. They had a wooden cabin that was submerged in the ocean of the east coast. According to his sister, the proposal was already in planning for a while after the duo decided on their trip over a year before.

“We knew that he wanted to propose to her and he decided that this was the most wonderful time to do it. (It was) the trip of a lifetime, and (he) really wanted to surprise Kenesha with this proposal,” said his sister.

Weber proposed to her by swimming underwater and holding a handwritten note that had a heartfelt message and the all-important, million-dollar question at the end of it. He then pulled a ring out and proposed to Kenesha, who was ecstatic! Kenesha caught the entire marriage proposal on camera and also posted it on Facebook.

She rushed to the top of the cabin to greet and hug him, but he never came back up. She asked the people on boats passing by to help find as no authority was present. They eventually succeed but could not revive him, leaving his loved ones completely distraught.

The fickle nature of life

In what felt like the most magical and precious moment in her life, Kenesha had everything around her change within a matter of minutes. It puzzled people, the cause of his death, and tried to understand how it happened. Authorities couldn’t find anything during their initial investigation, but an autopsy showed he had head injuries that suggested he knocked himself out.

Remembering her brother and his selfless nature, Mandy Weber spoke to the media and said,

“As you can imagine, there’s been sibling rivalry all of our lives, but he never ceased to make me laugh. Every time he walked into a room, he had an infectious smile and he has a sense of humor that is like no other,” she said. “He’s a beautiful soul that we’re going to miss dearly”.

The unpredictability of life and its fickle nature often makes people wonder about and question their journey. The grief of losing a loved one on such an auspicious day is a pain that no one should need to go through and one can only imagine the plight of Antoine and the family, who lost out on their angel in a matter of seconds, having no control on the outcome.
