During a live broadcast on Italy’s RAI channel for the Aquatic World Championship, Lorenzo Leonarduzzi and Massimiliano Mazzucchi received severe backlash for their commentary. During the last round of synchronized female diving, the duo seemingly lost control and sensitivity.
“This diver here, her name is Harper. She’s a harp player. How do you play the harp? You got to touch it? You pinch it”
One then said “si-la-do”, referring to musical notes, but also slang used for a woman who wants to have s*x.
“That’s the advantage women have over men. Women only have to know three notes,” said the other.
The duo was also shamed for their racist and s*xual comments when the Pakistani national athlete was on screen. “Smoke healthy, smoke Pakistani” is what one of them said. It did not stop there as they continued with the comments upon the entry of the Dutch athlete, talking about her appearance.
“Dutch divers are BIG,” said one. “Like ours, Vittorioso (referring to Italian diver Giulia Vittorioso). She’s big uh,” replied the other.
“Whatever, they’re all equally tall in bed.”

Leonarduzzi refrained from making any comments about the controversy but mentioned to Corriere della Sera that “these are words that do not belong to me.” The commentator was already part of a scandal previously over his sexist remarks. RAI has launched its disciplinary proceedings to assess the controversy. Social media users criticized the analysts for their “disgusting” comments, and other people questioned whether the pair would face any severe disciplinary repercussions.
In Italy, gender-based discrimination and sexism are persistent problems. According to the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), sexual harassment has occurred to about half of the adult women in the nation.
Advocates argue that commentators play a crucial role in shaping public perception and reinforcing gender biases. They emphasize the importance of inclusive and respectful language that highlights the athletes’ skills and achievements, irrespective of their gender. The controversy has prompted calls for broadcasters and sports organizations to adopt stringent measures to address sexism in sports commentary.
