Hollywood star is in for the long haul

Major personalities from the filming industry, NBA, MLB, have all made massive investments in various teams across the women’s sporting ecosystem. The latest addition to the long list is Hollywood megastar, Natalie Portman, who is the co-owner of Angel City soccer club. Never in her wildest dreams did Portman imagine she would be the owner of a soccer team and that, too in women’s soccer.

The Oscar-winning actress explained that her intrigue rose after she noticed her son, an avid soccer fan, watching the women’s soccer game with the same level of excitement, admiration and anticipation. She described it as her ‘Eureka’ moment, where she discovered the untapped potential the sport possessed and the opportunity for exponential growth.

Portman is the co-owner of Angel City, a club that competes in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Sports world slowly developing for the better

Natalie Portman partnered with Kara Nortman, a technology venture capitalist she met during the “Time’s Up” movement in 2018. Both women assembled a great team of owners with the best athletes and superstars. Speaking to the media ahead of the Angel City Equity Summit at the Sydney Opera, she said,

I was like this is culture change. This is it. If our boys look up to women like that, that’s how everything changes,” 

“That’s what got me really excited. And it was really the female players being such icons and heroes… I think their leadership, on and off the field in the (2019) World Cup, really was the inspiration for me and seeing Of course, my child react in that way.”

Important women’s football figures were present at the meeting, such as FIFA’s Secretary General Fatma Samoura and former American players Julie Foudy and Mia Hamm.. The club’s inaugural season was an immense success, with a massive attendance of the fans in the stadium and the team finished eighth.

The club policy mandates that 1% of the ticket sales go back to the players’ pockets and 10% of their sponsorships funds are used for local community uplifting. There are positive signs for women’s soccer with such notable personalities throwing their weight behind it and the upcoming years promise to be memorable!
