Soccer novice Martin Podhajský, was offered a spot on the third-tier Czech Football League (ČFL) team, Ústí nad Labem. The catch? His father agreed to donate a substantial 500,000 Kč to the club’s sponsorship fund. His only condition was that his son would play for a mere ten minutes during a match.

The President of Ústí nad Labem’s soccer club, Přemysl Kubáň, was at the center of this peculiar arrangement. While Martin Podhajský had no soccer experience to speak of, Kubáň defended the decision.  He emphasized that he would let anyone play for that amount. “He didn’t play soccer. What do I know, only FIFA on the computer. On the other hand, I didn’t see half a million rolling on the ground. If someone gives it to me, I’ll let anyone join”

The announcement of Martin Podhajský’s inclusion in the squad came alongside a series of cryptic videos released by Ústí nad Labem’s management.
