They say that age is just a number, and it’s never too late to try anything. 80-year-old Jaquim Cleal decided to take on the challenge of completing a sky-dive on her birthday. The fearless and vibrant resident of the village, Eglwysfach, chose to give herself a challenge at her age and do something exciting.

Understanding the reason behind her audacious choice will make every reader’s heart melt. The affectionate lady is all set to take the plunge in the honor of her late grandson, Frank Cleal. Frank was 13 years old when he passed away in a prolonged battle with bone cancer in 2021. The inspirational story, her grit and will, is nothing short of commendable. Having completed 80 long years of her life, Jaquim was keen on making her latest birthday count and not spend it at home like any old person. She wanted to ‘go big’ and that’s where the idea of the sky-dive was born. “I didn’t want to be ‘too old’ to do anything, so I have decided to do something a bit different – my first parachute jump,” said the rookie skydiver.

She is drawing inspiration to pull off the sky-dive from her late grandson Frank. Frank was a beloved member of the Cleal family, one who motivated and inspired everyone with his attitude and approach to life. He battled through the bone cancer with a smile on his face, and it is that very spirit that led Jaquim to her decision of the birthday sky-dive.

In order to honor her late grandson and celebrate his life and wonderful spirit, she decided to take a leap into the realm of the unknown – quite literally.

Jaquim’s daughter, Emma, was pleasantly surprised by her mother’s decision but threw her entire support behind it. She set up a charity called ‘BeMore Frank’ after the passing away of her son and has had multiple charity sky-dives since his passing away. However, Emma wouldn’t have anticipated her mother taking an interest in the charity sky-dive and spoke about it at length with the media.

She said, “Although I have discussed the charity skydives which have taken place since Frank died, it never occurred to me she would want to join in, it goes to show you really never are too old for anything. I’m so proud of her, even Frank would definitely have been impressed at this one!”

Their charity collaborates with a skydiving company, which is taking responsibility for Jaquim’s first-ever leap and perhaps not the last. Her other grandson completed his first sky-dive on his 16th birthday, and it seems like the tradition of birthday skydiving is here to stay for the Cleal Family. Soon, they will have their newest entrant on the list.
