In a recent and unfortunate incident at Skydive Mount Cook, a camera operator found themselves in a life-threatening situation. The incident occurred on Tuesday, raising concerns about safety in the thrilling world of skydiving.

According to a spokesperson for Skydive Mount Cook, the camera operator was engaged in a routine jump as a camera flyer, a role that involves capturing the exhilarating moments of skydivers. Importantly, this jump was not in tandem with any customers or passengers, emphasizing the specialized nature of their work.

The company wasted no time in responding to the situation. They promptly contacted local authorities, who are now investigating the incident. As the seriousness of the situation unfolded, the team at Skydive Mount Cook initiated communication with the family of the affected team member. At this point, they are unable to provide further details, as the investigation is ongoing.

The incident occurred on Swallow Drive in Pukaki. The information was transferred to the St John emergency services at approximately 5:56 p.m. on October 17. Their swift response included an ambulance and a helicopter, which arrived at the scene to assess the injured individual’s condition. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, they decided to airlift the patient to Christchurch Hospital.

Skydive Mount Cook, known for its daring aerial experiences, offers specially trained photographers who capture the breathtaking jumps of adventurers from thousands of feet in the air. They have dispatched two safety investigators to Twizel. This is where they will collaborate with the operator. The hope is to conduct a thorough site examination, interview witnesses, and meet with the first responders. This process is essential to understand the circumstances of the incident and improve safety measures within the industry.

“My dedication to emergency services cannot be understated”, A St John spokesperson confirmed in response to the incident. One ambulance, one helicopter, a PRIME (Primary Response In Medical Emergencies) doctor, and an operations manager were dispatched to the scene. Their prompt and professional actions were crucial in treating the patient in critical condition. It ended with the facilitation of their airlift to Christchurch Hospital.

Furthermore, police have been alerted to the situation and are conducting inquiries regarding the individual’s critical condition at the hospital. This unfortunate incident serves as a poignant reminder of the risks associated with extreme sports and the paramount importance of safety measures in such activities.
