NYPD Sergeant Gets Suspended After Fatally Hitting Man With Cooler, Knocking Him off His Motorbike

A tragic incident has raised concerns about the use of force by law enforcement. The New York Police Department (NYPD) suspended a  sergeant without pay. This was after the sergeant threw a picnic cooler at a motorcyclist, ultimately leading to the man’s death. The incident occurred on the evening of August 23 in Queens.

New York Attorney General’s office is currently investigating the incident. The chain of events unfolded when the victim, found himself in a confrontation with plainclothes officers from the NYPD.

Motorcyclist’s Attempted Flee and Fatal Confrontation

According to law enforcement sources, Eric Duprey was allegedly attempting to sell narcotics. This altercation happened in the vicinity of 2505 Aqueduct Avenue in the Bronx. As the officers moved in to apprehend him, Duprey made a desperate attempt to escape.

He seized a motorbike and fled the scene, riding on the sidewalk directly towards the officers who were in pursuit.

It was during this chaotic moment that the suspended NYPD sergeant, Erik Duran, hurled a picnic cooler at Duprey. The impact caused Duprey to lose control of the motorbike. This resulted in a collision with a tree and then he struck a nearby car and the pavement. The fatal sequence of events concluded with Duprey being pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Calls for Transparency and Investigation

The NYPD swiftly responded to the incident, acknowledging the tragedy and vowing a comprehensive investigation. The department then affirmed its commitment to conducting a thorough and transparent review of the events leading to Duprey’s death. The New York Attorney General’s office has also taken an active role in examining the circumstances surrounding the incident to ensure a fair and impartial assessment.
