Jasmine Powell-Calhoun assumed the role of head cheer coach at NDSU earlier this year. She recently explained the rationale behind this temporary hiatus. The primary goal is to address the challenge of recruiting enough female candidates for the cheerleading team. She emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for young aspiring cheerleaders, both female and male. She wants the people who look up to the program as a source of inspiration and pride.

“We haven’t been able to produce enough female candidates. So we just decided that it would be best to just take a beat and rebuild our program in this transition phase. She expressed her hope that this break would attract eager students and reignite the Bison cheerleading legacy.

The NDSU dance team traditionally collaborated with the cheer team. However, with the cheer team taking a step back, they are now exploring the possibility of stepping onto the sidelines.

NDSU’s Director of Athletics, Matt Larsen, highlighted the immediate focus on enhancing the football game day experience. He mentioned, “We’re focusing on football gameday. what does that look like? That’s the one that’s more immediate. We’ll work with them with how that impacts other programs or other sporting events down the road.”

Sarae Kellen, the head coach of the dance team, also expressed excitement about this opportunity. She was thrilled to support the cheer team’s resurgence. “We can’t wait to see where our spirit squad as a whole continues to grow in future years, once each side is full. And we’re so excited to take on the opportunity this year.”
