While the community of Ypsilanti thrives on unity and a spirit of togetherness, a remarkable group has been quietly but persistently pedaling a movement around. Transforming the way locals view and embrace cycling, the Ypsi Bike Co-op has worked tirelessly to educate, advocate for, and support local cyclists. With their mission to make biking more accessible and enjoyable for all, the team of volunteers has dedicated six years to this venture.

The Ypsi cycling team’s journey began in 2017 with a weekly bicycle repair education booth at the Ypsilanti’s Depot Town farmers market. Georgina Hickey co-founded this initiative as she aimed to address a pressing issue. Many locals desired to embrace cycling, but a lack of bike maintenance knowledge and safety concerns were holding them back. Hence, the co-op was formed to assist people with its unique and inclusive approach. But what unfolded was Georgina’s unexpected dream.

The Ypsi Bike Co-op’s welcoming booth is located at the Depot Town market, inviting anyone, with or without a bike, to step up and learn. Remarkably, the volunteers even offer free repair services, turning every bike-fixing session into an opportunity for education. Conveying her satisfaction with a warm smile, Hickey shared, “If you show up with the mission to build a positive bike culture in Ypsi, you get to be a part of it.” Fortunately, the community responded with similar spirits, adding around two new stalwart volunteers every year.

The new members are chosen from individuals who visit the club for weeks, showing their cycling determination. With the gentle training sessions, the club thrives, with an increasing number of members who acknowledge the unbiased culture. Hickey, aware of the case, appreciated the passion, emphasizing, “There are no barriers to entry.” Surprisingly, the co-op’s influence extends far beyond the farmers’ markets. They also actively engage with the community by participating in fun events hosted by local organizations.

Ypsi biking reaches its pinnacle

The Ypsi Co-op is well-known for joining events other than cycling trips as well. Their other endeavors include car and bike repair days and kids’ triathlon, which helps in uplifting the athletic spirit of the locals. The club even owns a partnership with the Mutual Aid Network of Ypsilanti (MANY). This allows the co-op volunteers to share their bike repair expertise at the monthly Pull Over Prevention Clinic. Valerie Fox, a dedicated volunteer since 2018, remarked with joy, “It’s exciting to be able to get into other parts of the community.”

While the co-op’s commitment to promoting cycling culture is making a significant impact, its motto is not just about repairing bikes and hosting events. The group also advocates for improving cycling infrastructure in Ypsilanti, along with the neighboring area of Ann Arbor. Nathan Voght, another co-op volunteer and Reimagine Washtenaw project manager, ensured the growth of the club. The cyclist added that their perspective on city issues concerning cyclists is getting heard more with time.

The Ypsi Bike Co-op reportedly brings the issues faced by cyclists to discussions with the Michigan Department of Transportation. With acts of pushing for safer cycling routes and beautification efforts, the cycling club offers various opportunities for those who share their passion for riding. The team hopes that this increased interest will eventually lead to more community partnerships and inspire future Ypsilanti residents.
