In the world of motorsports, crashes are often a part of the spectacle. However, some incidents stand out as truly jaw-dropping and leave you thinking “How on earth did he survive that?”
One such incident occurred in 2012 during a practice session for the Brazilian Super Truck Series. Driver Diumar Bueno experienced a heart-stopping brake failure at a blazing 120 miles per hour.
When Brakes Fail: A Terrifying Ordeal

As Diumar Bueno hurtled down the track at the Autódromo Internacional de Guaporé, disaster struck. His Super Truck’s brakes failed at a mind-boggling 120 mph. Panic could have easily taken over, but Bueno’s quick reflexes kicked in.
Desperate to avoid a catastrophic collision with the wall, he steered onto the grass infield. He hoped to slow down his massive, out-of-control vehicle. Unfortunately, things took an unexpected turn.
Rather than slowing down, the Super Truck maintained its breakneck speed, with some even suggesting it sped up a bit.

Spectators watched in disbelief as it smashed through the concrete barrier like a snowplow through a snow bank. He ended up in a couple of trees that were right behind the barrier, leaving many worried about his safety.
Reddit Reacts
One Redditor noted with irony, “Ironically, he went right through an ad for brakes.”
Others chimed in with their thoughts, with one fan saying, “Looks like the truck was still pulling… that thing didn’t slow down one bit! Glad he’s ok!” Another astute observer questioned whether it was a brake failure at all, suggesting, “Looks more like diesel runaway than brake failure. Although the former would cause brakes to overheat and fail.”

A diesel runaway is a potentially dangerous and uncommon event in diesel engines. It occurs when a diesel engine starts to run uncontrollably, often at very high RPM without any external input from the driver. This is typically caused by an external source of fuel entering the engine and igniting without the engine’s control.
Remarkably, despite the truck’s catastrophic destruction, Bueno emerged from the wreckage with ‘only’ two broken legs, a broken arm, and a cut tongue. While his injuries were undeniably serious, it also speaks to the safety measures in place for Super Trucks that he somehow survived this.
Super Trucks, weighing in at nearly 5.5 tons, are not your ordinary racing machines. These behemoths rely on large water-cooled disc brakes to bring them to a halt. When things go awry these colossal vehicles crash.

This may well be the reason why the heart-pounding world of Super Truck racing has yet to make its mark in the United States. The sheer power and weight of these machines demand exceptional control and safety measures, making Bueno’s survival even more remarkable.
