Day 5 of the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador, 2023 was another historic day. Three athletes secured their place at the Paris Olympics 2024. Out of them, the most significant achievement was of Marileidy Paulino. She didn’t just win Gold but also broke a 45-year-old record at the games.
Dominican sprinter Marileidy Paulino sets new record
Marileidy Paulino, known for her speed and determination, left the competition in awe as she blazed across the finish line in an astounding 49.95 seconds. This incredible performance not only qualified her for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics but also shattered the previous Central American and Caribbean Games record, set by Aurelia Penton of Cuba in 1978.

Although initially starting the race in fourth place, Paulino’s determination and drive were evident as she gradually accelerated past her competitors during the second half of the race.

The podium finishers
Roxana G?mez of Cuba secured the silver medal in the fiercely contested 400-meter race, finishing 1.28 seconds behind Marileidy Paulino. Claiming the bronze was Gabriella Scott from Puerto Rico, who completed the race 1.56 seconds after the champion’s victorious finish.

Evelis Aguilar from Colombia, Paola Mor?n representing Mexico, Lisneidy Veit?a hailing from Cuba, and Kenisha Phillips of Guyana also participated. Unfortunately, the Dominican sprinter Fiordaliza Cofil faced disqualification before the race even began.
Besides Paulino, Jereem Richards from Trinidad and Tobago and Michael Joseph of Saint Lucia also secured their place in the men’s 400 meters sprint event for Paris Olympics.
