Representing your national team in any sport is a precious moment for an athlete. Proving excellence in that team becomes a silver lining for everyone, leading to improvements in individual performance as well as the team as a whole.
Recently, a Caribbean team made history by securing a winning streak in a tournament, a success no Caribbean team has accomplished so far.
Jamaica women’s volleyball team creating history

The Jamaica women’s volleyball team achieved this milestone during the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association Senior Championship (CAZOVA). They advanced to the semifinals after defeating the Bahamas and the formidable contender, Trinidad and Tobago. Maintaining their winning streak in the regional tournament held at the Anthony Nesty Sports Hall in Suriname, they became the first Caribbean team to achieve this feat.

Their victory against Trinidad and Tobago was particularly thrilling, as it took nearly five sets to secure the win. “Trinidad and Tobago”, the defending champions from the previous year, posed a tough challenge. In another tense match against the tournament’s host, Suriname, Jamaica emerged victorious after a five-set battle. This tournament ends on July 31, 2023. It will be interesting to see how far the Jamaican women’s volleyball team can go in the competition. While volleyball achievements bring joy, it has its share of struggles and tragedies too.
A volleyball player lost her legs in a tragic car crash

There was news about a Tennessee player, Janae Edmondson, attending a tournament at St Louis on 18 February 2023. She was walking on the sidewalks with her family when a car came and hit her very violently. She immediately was on the ground and her father witnessed the whole scene. According to him, he was very horrified as one of her legs was immediately cut away and the other one was partially attached to her body. Since he was familiar with the military, and medical emergency training, he used belts of all the eyewitnesses to strap around the body which was oozing out blood. The person accused of hit and run is sued by the Edmondson family and they still wait for justice.
In the background, there are very deep waters of struggle. Dark stories and sad stories, and the victories we see are just a foreground of all the struggles of players. However, this victory for Jamaica‘s women’s volleyball team is one to be savoured and one to be celebrated. They were really dominating the tournament, and it is a hoped that they clinch the title in this regional tournament.
