The tragic death brings together two rival schools in Brooklyn, New York. In their opening volleyball match, they arranged a kick-off with a shared purpose. The teams came together to pay their tribute to Caileigh Duggan, the 18-year-old graduate from Fontbonne Hall Academy. Duggan passed away on 18th June from an undiagnosed heart condition. 

A Facebook post made on behalf of the school says that Duggan “passed away suddenly but quietly this weekend.” The opening match honored the memory of Caileigh, a former football player to mark the fact that her legacy will continue to inspire everyone who knows her.

The passing away of Duggan has left a deep mark on the teachers, staff, and students of the Fontbonne Hall Academy. As a form of commemorating her short yet remarkable span of life, the school decided to retire her adored jersey number 17. Paying a lasting tribute to her memory, through this act the impact she had on her acquaintances emerged. It was a poignant moment for everyone underscoring the aftermath brought about by her tragic demise.

Caileigh’s uncle, Brian Duggan said to EyeWitnessNews, “Being a teenage girl can be hard, so in Caileigh’s memory, try to be the kind of teammate and person that she was, on and off the court.” Beyond her athletic prowess, she continued winning hearts through her infectious smile and amicable personality. Losing such an endearing personality suddenly, during her sleep creates an unfathomable loss for her dear ones. Even after facing hindrances pertaining to her physical health, Duggan maintained a positive outlook towards life.

At a very early age, Caileigh was challenged with poor eyesight and severe eye problems that would lead to blindness. However, her indomitable spirit allowed her to overcome the physical complications. Gradually, Duggan emerged as an unbending personality taking captainship role in competitive teams. Being a hard worker, she aimed to make a difference in the lives of others by becoming a pediatric oncology nurse serving patients.

On the flight to pursue her dreams, Duggan even cleared the first step by enrolling herself in the competitive nursing program at the University of Tennessee. Beyond academics, she continued to enjoy life and was a huge admirer of country music. The driving force in her life was to help others and she was ambitious to secure a meaningful career balancing her love for volleyball and serving society.

Duggan will continue to live in the memory of her loved ones. The love and kindness she has spread among others during her short life has a strong impact. Her positivity encouraged two rival volleyball teams to set aside rivalry to honor her celebrating the power of love and unity.
