In the summer of 2018, the world of motorsport witnessed an electrifying clash of titans in St. Petersburg. Mad Mike Whiddett, the drifting sensation fresh off his Formula Drift Japan 2018 Championship win, crossed paths with Eduard Nikolaev. Nikolaev, at this point had already cemented himself as a Russian motorsport legend boasting multiple Dakar Rally victories.

The scene was set at the historic Kirov Factory, thanks to a whimsical idea conceived at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England a year earlier. Thanks to Red Bull, the idea became a reality. Two motorsport giants, each in command of radically different machines, were about to embark on an unforgettable drifting masterclass.

The motorsport world is no stranger to unusual collaborations. However, the pairing of Mad Mike Whiddett and Eduard Nikolaev was a spectacle like no other. Whiddett is well known for his gravity-defying drifts and precision behind the wheel of his lightweight, high-powered vehicle. Nikolaev on the other hand, built his credentials by conquering the treacherous terrains of the Dakar Rally in a monstrous KAMAZ truck.

The odds were stacked against Whiddett from the start. On the one hand, his car, a nimble and agile drift machine, was nine times lighter than Nikolaev’s behemoth of a truck. However, Whiddett’s four-rotor engine was dwarfed by the sheer size and power of the KAMAZ diesel engine. The torque, the weight, and the sheer scale of the vehicles were poles apart.

Yet, what truly defined this showdown was the exceptional skill and audacity displayed by both drivers. Against all expectations, they managed to synchronize their drifts, with each car producing around 1,000 horsepower. Whiddett’s ability to keep pace with Nikolaev’s monstrosity was so spectacular that it looked like it defied the laws of physics. Not to mention the roar of their engines echoed through the Kirov Factory, this is really a spectacle to watch.

A Triumph Beyond Borders

The partnership between Whiddett and Nikolaev transcended the boundaries of their respective motorsport disciplines. It was a proof of the universal language of motorsport. A language spoken through roaring engines, screeching tires, and a pushing the limits to the very edge.

Eduard Nikolaev, summed up the adventure aptly, stating, “We have actually once again shown that we can perform away from the sands and dunes too.”
