You may have come across various types of knockouts and disqualifications in a MMA match. Knockout by a unanimous decision, technical knockout, or disqualification due to foul play is a common way of finishing the match. However, bizarre scenes unfolded in a recent MMA game where the match ended within a minute after a protective gear malfunction.
The groin cup that didn’t want to settle in
In a recent amateur bout between Tommy Cox and Jason White, held under the Flex Fights promotion in Long Island, New York, the fight took an unusual turn. The incident left fans scratching their heads while the fighters were stunned.

Typically, MMA fighters wear protective cups to safeguard themselves against accidental fouls, as the groin area is particularly vulnerable to injury. However, in this instance, White’s cup became the catalyst for an abrupt and bewildering conclusion to the match.
From the beginning, there were signs of trouble. The commentators, James Leonelli and Charlie Quinn noticed White fidgeting with his cup during the pre-fight checks. They emphasized the importance of ensuring proper equipment. Consequently, a poorly secured cup can be distracting and pose risks. Unfortunately for White, this premonition soon became a reality.
Only seconds into the first round, as the fighters engaged, White’s groin guard unexpectedly fell out, landing on the canvas. Clearly frustrated, he swiftly picked it up, only for history to repeat itself moments later.
I have obtained the clip and it is glorious. For the record, I think most of the blame here lies with Jason’s manager so don’t be mean to the guy https://t.co/oWz3jmEGd2 pic.twitter.com/BQrzrXttNI

The ISKA referee, following the Unified Rules of MMA, decided that the repeated cup mishaps warranted disqualification. Cox was declared the winner without having thrown a single strike or attempted a takedown.
The surreal turn of events left spectators and the fighters themselves bewildered. Cox appeared nonchalant, shrugging his shoulders in disbelief, while White slumped to the canvas in disappointment. The match had ended prematurely, not due to a knockout or submission, but because of a recurring equipment malfunction.

The Flex Fights event, touted as Tiki Takedown 25 and eagerly anticipated by MMA enthusiasts, promised an exciting night of combat. However, it quickly turned into a comedy of errors with unusual disqualification. Despite the disappointment, this incident highlights the importance of proper preparation and equipment in MMA.
While the incident itself was undoubtedly bizarre, it serves as the significance of investment in quality gear. The commentators analyzed that the cup was probably a low-cost built-up. They urged fighters to take precautions to ensure their safety and prevent distractions during crucial moments in the octagon.
Nevertheless, the recurring issue with White’s groin guard falling out ultimately led to his disqualification, resulting in a premature and anticlimactic ending to the fight. Hence, proper equipment is important in MMA, and fighters to invest in high-quality protective gear.
