The cyclists were on their journey from the hotel en route to the starting line of the Gran Fondo Hincapie. They had no inkling that a remarkable encounter with wildlife was in store. Just as the group set in motion, a deer, startled by the approaching riders, decided to put on a display of its jumping abilities. Edwin Montoya, a participant with a helmet-mounted camera, documented the breathtaking instant when the deer vaulted across the road.
In an impressive demonstration of agility, the deer managed to soar over the majority of the cyclists. In the process, it brushed against Montoya in the process. However, the heart-in-the-mouth moment ended after the deer elegantly sailed over the lead cyclist, George Hincapie.
Instinctively, Hincapie ducked as the creature soared overhead, subsequently casting a glance behind to assess the situation. The riders trailing behind had to respond swiftly to avoid a potentially catastrophic collision with the mid-air deer.
Deer Encounters: Not Always a Fortunate Escape
