Poland’s speed skater, Natalia Maliszewska, finds herself at the center of a controversy that threatens to derail her career. The Polish Anti-Doping Agency (POLADA) has temporarily suspended the 28-year-old.
Known as Poland’s most decorated short-track speed skater, Natalia’s suspension came after allegedly breaking anti-doping rules on three separate occasions. While Maliszewska vehemently denies any involvement with prohibited substances, her suspension raises concerns about her future in the sport.
The Anti-Doping Rule Violations
The crux of Natalia Maliszewska’s suspension lies in three instances of alleged anti-doping rule violations.
POLADA’s official statement also confirmed these allegations. “This concerns three errors in the provision of residence data (ADAMS) and absences from the inspection window within 12 months. The decision is the result of the judgment of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.” She is alleged to have missed a one-hour window by a few minutes.
Maliszewska has been quick to defend herself against these allegations. She emphasized that her case does not involve the detection of any prohibited substances. “In recent years, I have been subjected to several dozen anti-doping tests, which have never revealed the presence of any prohibited substance.”

She might be facing very severe consequences. A two-year disqualification and the prohibition of her participation in the next Olympic Games are also highly likely.
These few minutes of delay have unfortunate major implications for her career. We might have to wait another three months to hear what the future holds for Natalia.
Maliszewska’s Desperate Bid to Salvage Her Career
As Natalia awaits the decision of the independent disciplinary panel, she is also doing everything in her power to clear her name.
The skater has clinched five medals at the European championships and a silver at the world championship. She is cooperating fully with investigators, providing documentation and evidence to support her case.
Maliszewska also expressed her remorse for the residence data errors that led to this predicament, saying, “My delay of a few minutes, for which I can only apologize, may result in very serious consequences.”
She also definitely hopes that the panel will take her extensive history of being clean into consideration, before taking a decision.
