During the filming of Season 3 of the Comedy Central sitcom, “Awkwafina is Nora from Queens”, he almost died! While horseback riding in Iceland, Yang faced an experience that left him shaken but grateful to be alive.

A Close Call in Iceland

In a recent episode of his podcast “Las Culturistas” with co-host Matt Rogers, Bowen Yang shared the details of his equestrian incident. In this scene, he was supposed to be riding a horse. However, Yang’s life took an unexpected turn when the film crew decided to use a drone for aerial shots.

The drone’s presence bewildered the horses, including the one Yang was riding. The rattled horses clocked them from hundreds of yards away, spooking them. The startled horse Yang was atop almost bucked him off, putting his life in serious jeopardy.

In the face of danger, Yang’s survival instincts kicked in, and he managed to hold on. He narrowly avoided a tragic fall. Reflecting on the incident, he did confess to something spectacular. While Bowen Yang survived his brush with danger in Iceland, his Scandinavian trip was bad in other ways. Unbeknownst to him, Yang had a mishap with his own used toilet paper, which ended up stuck to his shoe.

As he walked around the set, he was blissfully unaware of the unusual accessory he was unintentionally sporting. To his chagrin, everyone on set noticed the peculiar situation. This, thankfully, led to a moment of comedic mishap that lightened the mood after the tense horseback riding incident.

While Yang’s resilience allowed him to navigate through these challenges, he has also been candid about his struggles with mental health. Recently, he revealed that he has been dealing with “bad bouts of depression.” He had to take a temporary break from his podcast because of these issues.
