The police have always had a complicated relationship with the ones they swore to protect. No matter the reason, it is a problem that isn’t likely to be solved anytime soon. This is why every now and then they get into clashes with civilians. And more often than not, it doesn’t pan out well for anyone involved; as you will witness in his viral video.

Here a police officer found himself worse for the wear after attempting to tase a security guard. The incident occurred in the town of Kafr Qasim, in Israel. A man named Islam Taha confronted the police officers, preventing them from entering a building he was guarding. The video of this violent encounter has since gone viral, leading to outrage and concerns about the criminal justice system. But there’s no smoke without a fire. So what sparked the fight?

The Confrontation

The video starts off with a verbal argument between a couple of police officers and Taha. One officer, apparently having enough of Taha’s insubordination, decides to escalate the situation. He takes out his stun gun and attempts to tase Taha.

The officer inexplicably misses the initial few bursts when attempting to stun Taha. This allowed the bouncer a crucial few seconds to assess the situation and take offensive action. He swiftly ducked out of the way, ready to make his move.

However, the police officer grossly misjudged the situation. He wasn’t able to react to Taha’s quick reactions. Taha used this time to land a punch that looked as if it was straight from the UFC. This was enough to knock the officer down. The other officers then reacted, managed to subdue Taha, and arrest him eventually. He was then subjected to a fourteen-month sentence in Israel.

Rehabilitation vs. Public Safety

The assault on police officers by Islam Taha was undeniably a grave offense. However, the judicial response to his actions has ignited a fierce debate in Israel. The authorities recently decided to release Taha early, after serving a mere nine months of his 14-month sentence. This has now prompted discussions on the balance between rehabilitation and public safety.

On one hand, proponents of the decision argue that rehabilitation should be at the forefront of the criminal justice system’s objectives. They argue that this should be the case, particularly for first-time offenders. Authorities suggest that Taha’s participation in education groups and responsiveness to rehab programs in prison is a contributing factor. They believed that this was an opportunity to help reintegrate him into society as a reformed individual.

Conversely, critics, including many law enforcement officials, are deeply concerned. The opponents believe that such leniency sends a dangerous message to potential assailants. They fear that the early release of Taha might embolden criminals and pose a significant risk to the safety of police officers who put their lives on the line to maintain law and order.
