A gripping saga of determination and teamwork, this harrowing event will surely remain in the minds of all. Matthes embarked on a journey above the tree line, unprepared for the harsh conditions that awaited him. Ignoring warnings and unfavorable weather forecasts, he persisted, unaware of the danger ahead.
The hiker from New Hampshire fell into a drainage ravine as he made his way up, fighting the freezing conditions. He injured himself because of the fall and was now stuck in that state. Eventually, his desperate call for help echoed through the ravine, prompting a swift response from a team of brave individuals.
Undeterred by the daunting challenges, these responders sprang into action with unwavering commitment. In the midst of this chaotic situation, the Mount Washington Cog Railway stood as a shining beacon of hope. They quickly mobilized a snow-blower-equipped locomotive to transport the courageous rescuers up the unforgiving terrain.
Despite the biting cold and the protests of their machinery in the face of freezing temperatures, their determination remained steadfast.
Rescue team shines under icy adversity
After hours of effort, the rescue team finally reached Matthes around 6:20 p.m. to find him fighting hypothermia with no visible injuries. Their victory, however, was short-lived, as the daunting task of warming Matthes up stood in front of them.
“It was hours. We started at 3, and then I left here just before 8, at night. It was quite cold and that equipment doesn’t like to run in the cold,” said Ryan Presby, general manager of the Mount Washington Cog Railway.
