Family members brought him out with the hopes of teaching him swimming and a fun afternoon, but it quickly turned into an evening of horrors. During the lesson, he disappeared underwater. The family grew concerned after he did not rise up to the surface and made a frantic call to the authorities.

Jose went under the water and wanted to swim to a buoy about 40 feet away and never resurfaced,” the Davidson County Sheriff’s office wrote in a news release.

The incident occurred during a family outing where the young adult, eager to learn how to swim, was out with his family, who volunteered to teach him.

Rescue crew found the body in the lake after more than two hours of frantic searching, 40 miles south of Winston-Salem. Deputies told McClatchy News via email that nothing about the 26-year-old’s drowning death appeared suspicious, despite the fact that an investigation is still ongoing. They delivered the body of the man to the medical examiner’s office.
