The sport combines elements of windsurfing, kite surfing, and stand-up paddle boarding, giving the water sports community an exhilarating experience with a familiar yet novel feeling. However, every once in a while, you have the chance of running into issues in the sea. That’s exactly what happened when an Australian man, enjoying his sail, got knocked off it after colliding with an actual whale!

As bizarre as this incident sounds, it actually happened. The whale had simply taken a peek above the surface of the water when it made contact with the man. While the collision was rather spectacular, the behavior was rather common for a whale. Whales often poke their heads over the surface of an ocean. Since whales are mammals, they often have to come up to the surface of the water to breathe oxygen.

Besides this, whales poke their noses above the surface for a plethora of reasons. They communicate with their fellow massive fish over the surface sometimes. Breaching, spy-hopping, or tail-slapping are behaviors associated with social interactions and communication among whales. They also head over the surface for activities like feeding and migration, which they need for the sustenance of their species.

It was very fortunate that the man was not severely injured. The size of whales varies, but bigger species like the blue whale can be as heavy as 400,000 pounds. So it is very fortunate that the man was not met with one of these massive mammals. If he did, his fate would have been very different.
