The incident transpired at a spot on the West Coast that is situated near the Eyre Peninsula at around 3 p.m. As per the reports, when the surfer entered into the depths of the sea and was approximately 200 yards from the shore, he suddenly encountered the shark. The predator got hold of the surfer leaving him with a deadly bite.
Despite the chilling proximity to the deadly creature, the surfer managed to swim back to the beach exhibiting remarkable excellence. However, after the attack, he grappled with the aftermath which left him with deep gashes. Bleeding from the wounds, the surfer decided to drive himself to the nearest Elliston hospital and refused to take medical assistance.
On reaching the hospital, the injured was then airlifted and shifted to a hospital in Adelaide for further treatment. The severity of the surfer’s injuries is believed to have been avoided by the presence of the surfboard. It was the equipment that bore the evidence of the impact and the bite marks of the shark.
Concerns about the rising tragedies
The surfboard served as the life-saving buffer that sheds light on the vital role safety equipment plays in perilous situations. Nestled along the Spencer Gulf in the Great Australian Bight, Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas form the backdrop to these alarming incidents. Accidents involving sharks as the main character have been a frequent affair in South Australia.

The incident involving the surfer marked the sixth accident in a row within a time span of eight months. Even though in this case, the surfer managed to escape from the deadly clutches of the predator, the last accident claimed the life of 15-year-old Khai Cowley.
The South Australian government is still grappling with the measures to be implemented in order to mitigate shark attacks. In November, they had implemented shark patrols that scanned through the beaches from spotter planes. On being notified about the presence of sharks, the State Emergency Service circled the area and alarmed the people in the water with a siren.
