Surfing always sounds like a fun activity. The beach vibe and a surfing board are all that is needed for an adrenaline rush. Get ready for the Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, hitting Del Mar’s Dog Beach on Sunday, September 10th.
Presented by Blue Buffalo and hosted by the Helen Woodward Animal Center, this event promises a day filled with awe-inspiring surfing dogs, adorable canine costumes, and thrilling “freestyle surf” competitions, all in support of pets and programs at the centre.
The Del Mar Surf event is Back

Returning champion Petey, the “extra-small” Westie dog, aims to defend his title as the head of the pack. He faces stiff competition from surfers like Faith, a rescued Pitbull, and Barney Bear. Prizes await top earners, including Samson and Delilah, owned by Don Horn, and the surfing Frenchie Cherie the Surf Dog, owned by the Nykolayko Family.
Surfing competitions can turn out to be very exciting. There was a surfing competition where a surfer encountered a great white shark which made an incredible jump in the background. It is a click by the photographer Anast. The surfer who encounters this beautiful creature is Tyler Warren, and he goes awestruck as he sees the photo. The unexpected entry of the shark made this a memorable photo for the surfer for his lifetime. Who knows something interesting would be on their way in this Surf-A-Thon as well.
It would be very interesting to see if the creators of water come to meet the creatures of the land again. Helen Woodward has been nurturing these surfing sensations since 2013, partnering this year with SoCal Surf Dogs for lessons.

The preparations in the background
They start with safety training on the beach. The first step will be to teach balance on boards before taking to shallow waters with Dog Surfing pros. Jessica Gercke, PR Director of Helen Woodward Animal Center, says, “These lessons are a great way to bond with your dog. They also raise funds for orphan pets, and find out if you want to compete with your pup in the September competition.”
Meet Clancy, a new surfer, who’s overcome a leg amputation. Finally, she becomes a natural on the board, proving dogs can excel despite challenges. Don’t miss the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon on Sunday, September 10th, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
