Biking on the streets should not be too difficult. However, with speeding cars, careless drivers, and texting teens, it’s a lot more difficult to handle today than it might have been even a few years ago. While an accident must be investigated from all angles in every situation, sometimes, there is not always a single person responsible for it. This might have been the case for a young student who collided with a car while on her way to school. The student was riding her bicycle when the accident took place.
The accident was reported to local authorities at Fulshear around 6:47 a.m. The collision occurred at Cross Creek Bend at Creek Falls Drive. Authorities took note of the incident, saying the driver likely did not see the student cyclist.

After the case was reported, the student claimed that she stopped at an intersection, fully intending to follow road rules. Soon enough, she noticed a car halt at the adjacent stop sign, now believing it was safe for her to proceed. However, according to authorities, the driver failed to see the cyclist. Eventually, the student pedaled her way into the side of the vehicle as the driver proceeded through the intersection.

As of now, the driver has not been charged. Police say that at the time of the incident, it was dark, reducing visibility to motorists. However, the case is still under investigation.
On the plus side, “no significant injuries occurred to the student,” according to local police in Fulshear.“The student was cleared by EMS and is now resting at home,” Katy ISD wrote in a message to parents. “We are wishing the student a healthy recovery,” it added.
Over the past two weeks, the Katy area has seen three crashes involving teens and vehicles in crosswalks. While the previous incidents led to death and severe injury, fortunately, the recent cycling incident was not nearly as grave.
Recommendations for Road Safety
Fulshear Police have identified some small steps that could exponentially reduce the risk of accidents.

One recommendation involves bikes being well-lit. With adequate lighting, such as front and rear lights and reflectors, bikes will be much less likely to fall prey to accidents such as the ones in recent times.
Police are suggesting that cyclists fix a white light in front of their bike and a red light at the back.
Students have also been asked to weary of the unusual surge in traffic in the mornings. They have also been asked to exercise extreme caution while approaching crosswalks and intersections.

While this cannot be mandated, police have asked students to walk their bikes while crossing rather than riding them across the street. We hope that such changes will eventually lead to safer roads and neighborhoods.
