Every sport is now available for teens in modern times. However, psychological restrictions and stereotypes often come into play. For instance, gymnastics and dancing would sometimes be considered girly in the society. The fact is, only skill matters. Gender has nothing to do with the skill and any sport should be open for all.

A recent initiative is highlighting this specific fact and the South Africa’s cheerleading and Majorettes Association has now put forth opportunities for boys. This move will allow boys to participate and showcase their skills.

Majorettes to be available for boys

Luke India Ramos, a judge affiliated with the Western Province Majorettes and Cheerleading Association (WPMCA), is breaking new ground by welcoming boys interested in joining the world of Majorettes.

Ramos, known for his role as an adjudicator, has recently expanded his involvement by taking on a coaching role earlier this year. Currently, he is in charge of a junior team that he’s adopted from another coach in Brooklyn.

Traditionally, Majorettes in South Africa have been predominantly a female-oriented sport. However, the landscape is evolving, and Ramos is taking note of the modifications in society. He is determined to create a platform for younger boys who aspire to participate in this sport.

Ramos is starting from scratch in this endeavour, and he’s yet to finalize key details such as the team’s name.

The Blueprint for Diversification

He emphasizes that nothing is set in stone at this stage. What’s certain is that the opportunity is open to boys in high school, and prior experience is not a prerequisite.

Ramos clarifies the geographical scope, noting that the northern suburbs encompass a significant area. There will be many locations that will be considered. Kuils River, Brackenfell, Durbanville, Bellville, Belhar, Elsies River, Goodwood, Parow, Panorama, Plattekloof, Edgemead, and Century City, among others, are ranking high for consideration.

In these modern times, this majorette move sets an example of an evolving world. There are many skills and areas which are unexplored just because of gender bias, it robs people of their opportunities. This may be a ray of light towards something big where more sports could envision getting diverse. There are modifications in sports which were only played by men in the older times and are now having an interesting blend of men and women. Opening opportunities may not bag in a lot of participation but even if a single life gets changed, it is a success.
